About Basinwide

Basinwide is an alliance of investors, scientists, and organizations that provides evidence-based data and transparency on the methane performance of oil & gas operators.

This group has come together to heighten environmental stewardship through greater accountability and transparency. The focal point is an industry benchmark that accurately reflects the comparative, “apples-to-apples” performance of oil & gas operators in managing their methane emissions.

Basinwide will not disclose operator-specific data and will never engage in editorial condemnation of operators.

About the Basinwide Methane Emissions Index

The Basinwide Methane Emissions Index is an independent, anonymized benchmark that is evidence-based and validated by third-party methane experts. The objective is to provide a transparent, “apples-to-apples” comparison of methane performance on a basin-by-basin basis.

How is the Index created?

The data for the Index is collected by alliance members and analyzed using frameworks provided by Veritas and other widely accepted methane science protocol developers. Strict inclusion criteria is then applied to the data to ensure valid operator comparisons. This resulting data is charted into the Index. You can view the full methodology by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

What is the Top 10?

The Top 10 are the operators in each basin with the lowest methane intensity.

When is the Index released?

The Index will be released annually. The initial launch—on June 21, 2023—will serve as a preview of the index to come. The goal is a global index of emissions that will ultimately include every basin.

Who is included in the Index?

Operators are included in the index when Basinwide has sufficient production and emissions data to ensure a representative calculation of their methane intensity and their daily production is above 2000 BOE/day equivalent.

How is the data collected?

At launch, data is provided by two primary sources: a Stanford University study combining public and private data sources and Kairos Aerospace. Going forward, Basinwide is committed to incorporating data from any vendor that collects methane emissions data that meets the rigorous standards of Basinwide’s Science Committee. Our objective is to incorporate methane emission data from as many valid sources as possible. This will ensure Basinwide continues to be acknowledged as the most comprehensive and accurate source of comparative methane emissions data.

Is there a midstream Index?

Basinwide is committed to creating Midstream Indexes. Method creation, data validation, and data analysis are currently underway for the Permian Midstream Index.

Are there Indexes in other basins besides the Permian?

Basinwide is committed to creating Indexes for as many basins as possible. As data validated by Basinwide’s Science Committee becomes available, Basinwide will release Indexes in other basins globally.
